The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has been reported to have said, “The upper hand is better than the lower hand (i.e. he who gives in charity is better than he who takes it). And the best object of charity is that which is given by a wealthy person (from the money which is left after his expenses) (Sahih al-Bukhari 1427, 1428).” We find many other ahadith that highlight the benefits and importance of giving charity.

The Prophet  (peace and blessings be upon him) has said “Guard yourselves against the Fire (of Hell) even if it be only with half a date-fruit (given in charity); and if you cannot afford even that, you should at least say a good word" (Riyad as-Salihin).
